Rudder under construction

Two hours of work with my number 4 and I have a 22mm thick blank that is slowly taking the shape if a rudder.

Test of glue joins

It's always a good idea to test how well your glue holds up (i.e read the manual and discover you've glued together things that's not meant to be together at all).
All seems well, the glue holds up well, and a couple of minutes with a pull saw and a chisel have the part looking as it is supposed to

Centreboard

Two hours in the garage and I have a centreboard. Some sanding and then the dreaded glassing.
Before that I have to do some cleaning of the garage. For that reason, and to avoid getting dust in my lungs when sanding, I have bought myself a shop vac.

More progress!

Beveled the last bulkheads and propped one of the sides sheats up on the bulkheads. I assume everyone does it. Lots of work for nothing more than the possibility to see ones progress. It's big!

Last bulkheads glued!

Two sessions in the garage with the son saw the pieces of wood cut, and an hour and a bit by myself later they are glued together.  Note to self: buy more clamps.. (No one has ever said that before)

With the sidearms glued to the bulkhead you get an impression of how big she will be, quite big actually. I'll try to build all small part before assembly, there won't be much room left on the garage after.

Rudder fittings

Bought rudder fittings today. The 8mm pin apparently is for a 49er and prized there after.. Looked to good to not buy though. Altogether 1000 SEK (about $150), the small boat specific parts adds up to a substantial part of the whole cost for a goat.

Oops!

This is not the right way to make the bevels on the transom!

Tiller and rudder box

Needed to feel that at least one part of the goat is finished so I planed the staves from the old mast and built the rudder box and tiller. Fun!

Recycling

Got 30 minutes to do a bit of boat building today. Ripped the broken bottom part of my old pram's mast into what will become the tiller of my goat. Feels good that some parts of the old boat will continue sailing even though the boat itself lies on the bottom of a lake in Dalsland. The rest of the mast will probably become the boom of the skiff.

Added some bevels

"I want to go to the garage and build a bit" my son told me today, and who am I to argue? Got two bulkheads beveled using my new Stanley nr 4. Somehow I seems to have lost my old one that used to be my grandfather's (that is probably a criminal offence, so don't tell anyone). Anyway, the new Stanley that everyone says is crap actually did well. It doesn't look as well made as the old ones and it probably isn't, but it's definitely up to the job.

At last!

You might not believe it, but I made progress on the goat today. Transom and two bulkheads glued up. Since I didn't shop around much for wood, I bought sawn timber instead of planed to size. Therefor, all pieces of wood had to be planed with granddad's old plane. Fun, but wood planed to size from the store would had been faster.
